Things to do:

-Hit the beach at Lathrop State Park.  You can also go boating, or follow one of the walking trails in the park for beautiful views of the Spanish Peaks, Greenhorn Mountain, and more.

-Explore La Veta, an art haven nestled at the foot of the West Spanish Peak.  Highlights include the Francisco Fort Museum, a local history treasure trove, including a Spanish conquistador sword and original saloon and schoolhouse.

 

-Take a drive up through the stunning Huerfano River Valley to pass through historic Badito and Gardner, with stunning views of the Wet Mountains the whole way along.

- Do you like summiting (almost) 14ers? Do you enjoy leisure strolls at high altitude? Either way, head up to Cordova pass where you can attempt a summit of the West Peak or just enjoy the views of the meadow at the beginning of the summit trail.  The county is criss-crossed by a number of trails of varying lengths and difficulties, there's something for everyone.

- Drive along the historic Highway of Legends - a National Scenic By-way that offers great views of the peaks and the surrounding forest, all from the comfort of your car!  Audio tour available for download.  The drive will take you up through La Veta and Cuchara, and if you stay on it, will drop you down into Las Animas County, eventually ending up in Trinidad.
